It Starts with a Conversation
Discipling the Next Generation
First, Seek Him...
As Christ followers, our lives are to be about more than ourselves. God wants us to love Him with all our hearts then diligently teach the next generation about Him. What does this look like in your life? Seek the Lord about this today!
...Then Speak Him
Discipleship starts with a conversation, telling the next generation about who God is and what He has done in your life. This is as simple as talking about Him along life’s way – and this is something that every believer can do! Speak Him, friend!
Deuteronomy 6:6-7a
“These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children…”
Word
God, what are you saying to me?
Throughout history, God commands His people to love Him and listen to Him. Out of this love and listening, He wants us to pass on His words to the next generation, teaching them “diligently.” This conveys the sense of sharpening someone. What about you? If you love God, are you listening to Him? If you’re listening, are you speaking His Word to someone entrusted to you? Who are you “sharpening” by diligently teaching them today?
Why
God, why does this matter?
Since the beginning of humanity, households have always existed in different ways, shapes and forms. There’s this to do and that to do in all our homes, but God has specific things for His people to do. He wants us to talk about His Word “when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (v. 7). This is discipleship! What does this look like for your family? When and where along life’s way are you purposefully talking about God and His Word?
What
God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?
The Psalms say, “We will…tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done” (78:4) and “My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day…O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come” (71:16, 18b). Scripture is full of people determined to tell the next generation about who God is and what He has done. Are you this kind of person determined to pass on your faith? What sort of conversations will you have today?
Worship
God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?
The Apostle Paul discipled a young man named Timothy, saying “Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:13). We can follow Paul’s example, entrusting God’s Word to the next generation, too. Discipleship starts with a conversation, and it’s as simple as sharing what you have experienced with the Lord. Discipleship flows out of hearts in love with Jesus. As you “Seek Him,” to whom will you “Speak Him” today?
Deuteronomy 6:6-7a
“These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children…”
A Family Blessing
Lord God, help us to speak Your truth to others today! Help us be bold in sharing who You are and what You have done in our lives! We love You! In Your Name, amen!
