As I watched the full moon rise over an ancient English church last night, God connected dots that have been eleven years in the making for me.
Back in 2015, I asked the Lord to show me a new picture of prayer. The old “stoplight” analogy, which I’d been taught for prayer as I grew up, just didn’t work for me anymore. It felt cold and impersonal, not to mention entirely uncompelling. In that season, I was writing a Vacation Bible Blast for our church, creating a summer curriculum about prayer using the beautiful children’s movie “Despicable Me”—which actually ends with a full moon.
As I sought the Lord both for that writing and for a better picture of prayer, one morning I was standing at a gas pump—of all places—when God gave me an answer.
Waiting for my tank to fill, I happened to look over my left shoulder and noticed a full moon still hanging in the mid morning sky. I sensed a whisper, “There it is—your new symbol for prayer.” Immediately, the words, “As sure as the moon is always there, so are the answers to all of your prayers” came into my mind. My now-grown children can attest, I’ve spoken these words many times throughout the years since.
I wondered if the Lord might ever help me creatively express the rest of this refrain. It was okay if He didn’t; the picture was more than enough for me. But this morning—after displaying a glorious moon over an English countryside last night—He did.
May these words fill your heart, as they have mine… a hopeful refrain, a reason to keep praying, keep interceding, keep coming to the Lord again and again with our cries. ❤️
As Sure As the Moon
As sure as the moon is always there—
So are the answers to all of our prayers.
Tho sometimes we see them and sometimes not yet—
Not a word of our cries does God ever forget.
Whether covered or glowing, the moon is a sign
Established in heaven, for purpose divine.
Beyond understanding, God’s wonderful ways.
His moon lights the dark—and affects how I pray.
I may see His answer, like full moon at night,
Or still be in waiting, like moon out of sight—
But clouds passing over can never erase
What God has in store for my life by His grace.
Full dark of the moon is when it is new;
Still present, though hidden completely from view.
So I’ll pray through the darkness and trust what I know:
God’s working, though I see not yet what He’ll show.
His answer—not mine—is as sure as His Word,
Trustworthy, enduring: my cries are all heard.
Though moon stays in hiding or night lingers long,
I’ll keep calling to Him, for He hears all along.
I rise before dawn and I cry out for help.
I call to Him during night watches, as well.
I believe that God hears, for His promise is true—
What He says in His Word, He is faithful to do.
So as sure as the moon—my simple refrain,
He’s answered my prayers, and He’ll do it again.
God listens, He hears, He attends to my plea.
I’m thankful, so thankful, He listens to me.
Be encouraged! ❤️
