Have you ever wondered if you’re doing enough as a parent? Have you ever worried that you might be late, behind, or unqualified? Have you ever stumbled around trying to find the right words to pray or the right words to say? I sure have! I’ve been a mom for almost three decades now, and I still wonder at times about these questions. However, the most reassuring, affirming, encouraging word that God has reminded me of recently is that He is already at work.
This truth should change everything about our perspective. It can steady our anxious hearts; it can calm our fear of never being “enough.” It can also entirely reshape our devotion and discipleship. You see, the Bible teaches that faith does not begin with human effort. Faith begins with divine initiative. Before we Seek Him Speak Him (as important as that is!), God is already seeking and speaking. We get to join Him in what He is already doing.
You and I don’t just initiate the story of devotion and discipleship in our families; we are privileged to step into the passionate pursuit that God has already begun.
Family Disciple Me exists because God moves first, and the overwhelmingly amazing thing about this is that we are invited to move with Him.
God Seeks First — Zeteo
Scripture consistently portrays God as the One who moves toward people. In the New Testament, the Greek word often used for this kind of seeking is zēteō. This word means to search for, pursue, or strive after something with intention and care. This is not a casual glance or a half-hearted effort. It is an active, purposeful pursuit.
In the Garden of Eden, God goes looking for Adam and Eve. In the books of the prophets, God searches for His people to bring them to Himself. In the Gospels, God is the Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine, the Father who runs toward the returning son, the One who searches until what is lost is found (Luke 15). God does not wait passively. He pursues intentionally.
Families, this changes everything for us! It lifts the soul-crushing pressure that says, If I don’t get this right, everything will fall apart. God is already seeking the hearts of our family members—more faithfully, more patiently, more relentlessly than we ever could.
God Speaks First — Laleo
What’s more, the story of Scripture tells us that God speaks. Scripture says, “In the beginning was the Word…” (John 1:1). One of the Greek words used for speaking in the New Testament is laleō, which carries the sense of speaking freely, openly, and relationally. God is not merely making announcements from a distance; He is communicating, revealing, and making Himself known.
He calls out to us through the heavens, through His Word, through creation, through His Spirit, and more. The Mighty God, Creator, King of Kings and Lord of Lords is not silent, distant, or hidden. He is consistently revealing Himself. He speaks truth. He entered history in the person of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. He calls out to us, over and over, in countless ways, drawing us to Himself.
This matters for all of us. As we lean into devotion-driven discipleship, we are not responsible for manufacturing spiritual insight or saying everything perfectly. We are called to echo what God has already spoken.
God Initiates. We Respond.
God is seeking and speaking before we get it all figured out, before we understand all the details, before we are “good enough.” Jesus’ cross seals God’s passionate pursuit of us beyond question. Scripture tells us that, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
God did not wait for our improvement. God did not wait for our maturity, much less our perfection.
He moved first.
Devotion-driven discipleship, then, is never about earning God’s attention. It is about responding to God’s initiative with trust, obedience, love, and then action.
This is the heartbeat of Family Disciple Me.
God is seeking us and speaking to us, right now, already, because He loves us. And then, we get to Seek Him because He has sought us. We get to Speak Him because He has spoken and is speaking to us.
Our personal devotion flows from our REAL relationship with Him, and then our discipleship flows from that devotion.
Family Disciple Me exists to help families of all ages and stages move confidently from meeting with God personally to making Him known naturally. When we realize we are entering this story with a God who is already passionately pursuing us, we can make Him known to others without fear, without formulas, and without any need for performance.
With this mindset, discipleship is not another burden to carry; it is a blessing in which we get to come alongside our God who is already present and active.
A Word to Families
So, moms and dads, older brothers and sisters, aunties and uncles, disciple-making Christ followers, you are not too late. You are not behind. You are not responsible for every single detail.
You are stepping into a story God has already begun.
Family Disciple Me exists to remind families that discipleship is not about perfection but participation. God seeks. God speaks. And He invites families to join Him in shaping the next generation through meaningful, intentional, biblical conversations about Him.
God initiates through seeking and speaking. We join with Him as we Seek Him Speak Him. And the next generation is impacted along the way.
Be encouraged! ❤️
