Christmas ADVENTure | “Do You See the King?” | Convo #2

“You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.’ …And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him…” Matthew 2:1–2,9b-11a (NIV)

SEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives!

This ADVENTure journey, Do You See What I See?, is all about learning to look by opening our spiritual eyes wider than ever before. Last week we looked at God’s promises. This week let’s focus on the fulfillment of those promises: the King Himself. The wise men saw the star, recognized it as a sign, and began to seek the King of kings. They didn’t just notice God’s heavenly sign; they intentionally, deliberately moved toward it. Their story reminds us that when God gives us something to “see,” He’s inviting us to “seek Him” more deeply. The same God who led those wise men by starlight still leads us today. In the noise and motion of this season, He asks: Do you see Me? Will you seek Me? Let’s accept His invitation and lean into what He wants to show us through His Word in this conversation.

(Along the way, listen to the podcast about The King  conversation here.)

WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture?

The story of the wise men in Matthew 2 is a perfect example which shows us how to accept God’s invitation of  Jeremiah 29:13. There, God promised, “You will seek Me and find Me.” Those ancient travelers believed His promise. They followed the faint light of that promise all the way to Jesus and found exactly what they were looking for. God always, always, always keeps His Word for everyone who truly seeks to find Him. ~ When you think about the timeline of Jeremiah’s promise, do you think the wise men could have read those ancient words? What does this tell you about God’s plan through the ages? What might have helped the wise men keep going on such a long journey? Where might God be shining a “star” in your life that points you closer to Him?

WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter?

The wise men set an example for all time: Those who see signs of God’s truth are led to seek the Source. Wise men sought the King back then; wise people still seek Him today. Their perseverance through a journey of distance, delay, and even danger proved that seeking Jesus is always worth it. ~ Why does it matter that you keep seeking Jesus, even when life feels full of obstacles? How does seeing others seek the Lord strengthen your desire to “Seek Him” in your own life? What happens to faith when we stop looking for God’s presence? What happens when we keep pressing in?

HOW:  How does God want us to respond to this truth?

This Christmas, let’s choose to be seekers. Like the wise men, let’s look for King Jesus in our worship, in Scripture, in prayer, in the conversations around our tables, and in the quiet moments when no one’s watching. Let’s refuse to let hurry, stress, or distraction blind us to His presence. God promises that when we seek Him wholeheartedly, we will find Him, and when we see Him clearly, we begin to see everything about our lives more clearly, too. ~ How can you make space this week to slow down and really “see” Jesus? What might you need to lay aside to focus on Him? What do you begin to see differently about your life when you see Jesus as the true King? Where do you sense God inviting your family to Seek Him together this week?

SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others!

Every week of Do You See What I See? reminds us of the Seek Him, Speak Him rhythm. Notice that the first three letters of “Seek” is “see.” Once you see Him, then show Him to others. The wise men didn’t keep their discovery hidden; they bowed in worship and then carried their experience of seeing the newborn King with them back to their homeland. As we seek and see Jesus this season, let’s help others see what we see. Share your Jesus Story. Tell someone how you’ve seen God’s faithfulness. When we truly see Jesus, we can’t help but point others to Him. God’s ancient promise still echoes: “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.” So this week, let’s take Him at His Word:  Seek Him, Speak Him.

WEEK 2 ADVENTure Activity: The Wise Man Hunt

Overview:
This week’s family ADVENTure invites families to go on a “Wise Man Hunt”—a Williams family tradition. Each family member becomes a “seeker,” following a tangled string trail that leads to a hidden gift or surprise. The game celebrates the Magi’s journey to find the newborn King and reminds families that seeking Jesus is still the greatest adventure of all. Invite a friend or neighbor to join you!

How It Works:

  • Each child (or participant) begins with a different color of string or yarn.

  • The strings are wound and tangled creatively throughout the house—under furniture, around doorknobs, up stairs, behind cushions, etc.

  • Each color leads to a hidden gift, treat, or symbolic treasure (like a small wrapped ornament, chocolate coins, or a Scripture card).

  • Along the trail, families can place short verse cards or clues connected to the Magi’s journey from Matthew 2:1–2, guiding participants toward “the King.”

Spiritual Connection:
As families follow their string paths, they can reflect on how the Wise Men followed the star—through twists, turns, and long distances—until they found Jesus. It’s a hands-on reminder that:

Those who seek Him, find Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

True wisdom isn’t in knowing everything—it’s in seeking the One who knows all.

Family Reflection:
After the hunt, gather to read Matthew 2:1–2 aloud. Talk about these questions together:

How did the Wise Men know where to go?

What did they do when they found Jesus?

What does it mean for us to seek Jesus today?

Optional Add-On:
For a fun extension, families can place three Wise Men figurines (or paper cutouts) somewhere in the house early in the week. Move them a little closer to the nativity scene each day as a visual reminder of their journey—culminating on Christmas Day when they “arrive” to worship the King.
