SEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives!
Throughout this collection of conversations, we’ve climbed the mountain of prayer with Moses, Elijah, Peter, James, John, and finally, with Jesus Himself. Each encounter revealed a different dimension of what prayer truly is:
-
Moses taught us to intercede, meeting God face-to-face for the sake of others.
-
Elijah taught us to believe, trusting God for the miraculous and impossible.
-
Peter taught us to strengthen, finding restoration in Jesus so we can strengthen others.
-
James taught us to follow, letting our lives speak louder than our words.
-
John taught us to abide, remaining in the presence of Jesus where love and truth flow.
-
And Jesus Himself taught us to surrender, praying not for our will but for the Father’s to be done.
Now, at the end of the story, the glory of the mountain fades into the reality of the valley below. The disciples descend with Jesus, only to face a desperate situation they cannot fix. His words become the echo of everything we’ve learned: “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.” Prayer is not an escape from the world; it is Heaven’s answer for the world. It is where power meets weakness, and where faith meets need. Let’s Seek Him about this, asking how transfiguration prayer changes forever the obstacles we face in prayer. (Listen to the Conclusion Podcast here.)
WHAT: What is God saying through this Scripture?
In these words, Jesus revealed that some battles (spiritual, emotional, or relational) cannot be won by human wisdom, effort, or willpower. They require divine intervention, and that only happens through prayer. This final conversation in this series reminds us that the purpose of the mountaintop is not just to experience God’s glory, but to bring His power into the places that need Him most. ~ What situation in your life feels impossible without God’s help? How does this verse remind you that prayer is the pathway for God’s power to work through you? Where do you sense Jesus calling you to depend on Him more deeply in prayer?
WHY: Why does this Scripture matter?
Every mountain moment should lead to a mission moment. God reveals Himself so that we will rely on Him, not just admire Him. The disciples learned that His glory wasn’t meant to stay contained on the mountaintop; it was meant to empower their ministry in the valleys. Jesus wants us to understand that prayer isn’t a momentary act but a lifestyle of reliance. We don’t pray simply to witness glory; we pray so His glory can work in and through us. ~ Why do you think Jesus connects prayer so closely with power? What happens when we try to serve God without first seeking Him? How might prayer be the bridge between what you can’t do and what God can?
HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth?
Jesus invites us to keep praying, not just at the peaks of inspiration, but in the everyday valleys where life happens. He wants us to walk back into our families, communities, and world as people who know how to seek His face, believe His promises, and depend on His power. When we live this way, prayer becomes not just what we do; it becomes who we are as we face “this kind” of circumstances and situations. ~ What would it look like to live every day as someone who brings the mountain into the valley? Who might God be calling you to pray for with renewed faith and persistence? How will you continue to practice the lessons of interceding, believing, strengthening, following, abiding, and surrendering through prayer?
SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others!
Now it’s time to go! Let’s step down from the mountain and into the mission God has for each of us. The same Jesus who revealed His glory invites us to live as a reflection of it. Let’s pray like Moses, Elijah, Peter, James, John, and Jesus. Let’s pray with intercession, belief, strength, obedience, abiding, and surrender. Let’s pray as His disciples who have seen His light and now carry it into a dark world. Along the way, we have the amazing opportunity to invite others into the journey. So, pray with your family. Pray with your friends. Pray with those who are desperate for God to move. And when you do, remember: “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.” The mountain was never the end; it was the beginning of the mission. Go now, and be the kind of pray-er whose transformed life helps heaven meet here, in Jesus’ Name, amen!
