THE GOSPEL GIFT: Truth #1: We Need a Gift We Cannot Give Ourselves

First, Seek Him...

Mary’s words in Luke begin our Advent series this year. God sees our need and has done great things to help us. In this first Advent conversation, we focus on the reality of our brokenness and God’s gift. This is the true reason for Christmas! Seek Him about this today!

...Then Speak Him

This year’s Advent series consists of four conversations about the Gospel, based on four quotes from the Christmas story. Week by week, these will guide us in understanding the Gospel and teaching the next generation what Christmas truly means for our salvation.

Mary’s words in Luke 1:46-48a
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant…He who is mighty has done great things for me”

Word

God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?

We all like presents at Christmas. Our families give us some, and friends give us others. However, there are some gifts that only God can give us. Humanity needs hope, healing and, most of all, salvation. Mary said God “looked on the humble estate of his servant” and did something to help her. We all need a gift we cannot give ourselves, and this is the first truth in our Advent series “The Gospel Gift.” ~ What is a gift you’re hoping for? What is “humble” or needy about our lives? What gift(s) do you need that cannot show up under a Christmas tree?

Why

God, why does this matter?

We are sinful, broken people, and, though we may try, we cannot fix all our brokenness. God could have left us this way, but He didn’t. Before time began, He planned the gift of our salvation. Mary said, “He who is mighty has done great things.” What we call “The Gospel Gift” this Advent is the great thing God has done for us:  He sees our needs and helps us. ~ What is “broken” about our lives? What’s a way we try to “fix” ourselves? Why do you think God chose to help us? What is a great thing God has done for you?

What

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

Every year, children send wish lists to Santa, and he may or may not give them what they want. However, God always helps those who cry out to Him. Psalm 72:12 says, “He will deliver the needy who cry out.” Not only does God respond to our needs, He promises more gifts: “I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:11-13). ~ What gifts does God promise when we seek Him with all our hearts?

Worship

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

It honors God when we recognize the brokenness of our lives and turn to Him. He is not bothered by our neediness. In fact, as much as we may want Christmas presents, God wants us to want Him. He wants us to realize how much we need Him. We worship Him when we call out to Him about salvation and everything else in our lives. ~ Do you personally need God? Why? Is there a certain gift you need from God today?
