It Starts with a Conversation
Discipling the Next Generation:
An intro Conversation
First, Seek Him...
As Christ followers, our lives are to be about more than ourselves. God wants us to love Him with all our hearts then diligently tell the next generation about Him. What does discipleship look like in your life? The following conversation guide is for you to “Seek Him” about this today!
...Then Speak Him
We can share with those entrusted to us about who God is, what His Word says and how He has impacted our lives. Discipleship like this isn’t a formula or a class; it is a lifestyle that simply starts with a conversation along life’s way. Ponder the WORD, WHY, WHAT and WORSHIP of this week’s Scripture about discipleship, then “Speak Him” today!

Deuteronomy 6:5-7
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
Word
God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?
God wants His people to love Him with everything we’ve got, keep His Word in our hearts and then talk to the next generation about Him. These conversations about God can be called “discipleship,” and the WHY of discipleship is simply because of our love for Him. Discipleship is following the Lord (“Seek Him”) and then talking about Him and His Word (“Speak Him”) to others. ~ What about you? Do YOU love the Lord? What has He done in your life? Who in the next generation has He entrusted to you to disciple for Him?
Why
God, why does this matter?
Deuteronomy 6 says discipleship matters, “So that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God… by keeping all his decrees and commands… so that you may enjoy long life…so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly…” (vs. 2-3). Discipleship comes with God’s promises of blessing. ~ Does discipleship matter to you? Have you experienced God’s blessings in this?
What
God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?
Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). Christ’s Great Commission for the nations can begin with conversations in our own homes and relationships: “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” (78:4)). ~ Who are the “nations” entrusted to you? What kind of conversations are you having with them?
Worship
God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?
The WHY of discipleship is love and obedience; the HOW of discipleship is simply: “Impress (this) on your children. Talk about (this) when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (Deuteronomy 6:7). Discipleship is a lifestyle of sharing what we have experienced with Jesus and intentionally pointing others to Him along life’s way. ~ Have you recently told God how much you love Him? How can you make discipleship conversations a priority in your life?
Deuteronomy 6:5-7
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
A Family Blessing
Lord God, help us “Declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come” (71:18b). We love You, and we want others to know and love You, too! In Your Name Jesus, amen!
