The Story Behind FAMILY Disciple Meby Tosha Lamdin Williams, Founder and Executive Director
The Family Disciple Me ministry is the outgrowth of my own life and story. I accepted Christ as my Savior at the age of four and grew up in a Christian home where I went to church and Christian school from preschool through college. I could recite countless verses, win good ol’ fashion “sword drills” and tell you the correct spellings of every book of the Bible. I could describe the Romans Road, do door-to-door evangelism and sit through hours of church services. I was privileged to have this sort of Christian education in my childhood.
Fast-forward to when my husband and I were married in 1993. We both attended Dallas Theological Seminary, where I earned a master’s degree in biblical studies. With this, all the pieces of God’s Word began to connect for me.
And then we had kids.
By this time, my husband and I had completed seminary and moved to Colorado Springs to start Vanguard Church (where my husband serves as senior pastor to this day). As a pastor’s wife, I taught God’s Word to many, many people along the two plus decades of our ministry at Vanguard.
However, there’s something intimidating about teaching your own kids God’s Word. Where do you start? What do you say? What should you require? Of course, we prayed and read through the Bible together regularly. But, even as a pastor’s wife and seminary grad, I still felt inadequate in discipling my kids.
One year I felt inspired to dive in by choosing my top “most important verses” for us to memorize on our way to school. By the end of that school year, my children of all ages had memorized almost 35 passages. The next year, I decided to try it again – to similar success. In the ten-minute rides here and there, we memorized verses while I explained the theology and applications behind them.
This process birthed the Family Disciple Me program, a study that has impacted my own family, was originally published at mommydiscipleme.org and is now a full-fledged ministry with resources available at familydiscipleme.org. Discipling the next generation, I have realized, doesn’t have to be hard. It can, in fact, be one of the best, most enjoyable things you can do in raising your kids.
Family Disciple Me offers you weekly studies for you to use with your own children and those entrusted to you. These studies are Scriptural, intentional, eternal and entirely do-able. They are available on mobile website for you to use as a resource along life’s way, no matter how old or young your children are. Through a structured sequence, you will lead your children in connecting the dots of God’s Word, His character and biblical theology. You can delve as deep into each lesson as your children are able to go at their ages and stages of development. Any which way, you will disciple those entrusted to you in a progression that will, over the weeks and years, help God’s Word make more sense to them for a lifetime.
I can think of nothing more important than helping our kids connect the dots of their faith. This is the foundation of life. Discipleship doesn’t guarantee that our children are going to love God and love others; however, it lays the foundation for faith that, prayerfully, every child will build their life on or come to back if they wander. This is my passion, based on my own experience as a Christian and as the mom of five kids. I share it with you, praying that as you “Seek Him,” you will powerfully “Speak Him” into the next generation entrusted to you.
