It Starts with a Conversation

Thanksgiving Conversations: The Practices of Thanksgiving

First, Seek Him...

Thanksgiving is a wonderful season of gratitude, but God wants thanksgiving to be part of our entire lives. As we pray, rejoice and seek the Lord’s peace with thanksgiving, our lives set an example for others to follow. What kind of leader are you today?

...Then Speak Him

Our actions often speak louder than our words. Praying with a thankful heart, finding joy in the midst of hard times and choosing to find God’s peace are powerful examples to lead those entrusted to us. Put these things into “practice,” then encourage the next generation to do the same!

Philippians 4:9
“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me…”

Word

God, What Are You Saying To Me?

“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me…and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:9

Discover: This month, we’ve talked about the prayers, joys and peace of thanksgiving. Now we’re reminded to practice what we’ve learned by following the examples of godly people!

Dialogue: Talk about some people who set a good example for you. What do they do that makes you want to be like them? How do we know who we should follow?

Dive In: Right now, write a thank you note or text someone who is a good example for you. Tell them what you appreciate about their example. Talk about how you can be like them.

“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me…”

Why

 God, Why Does This Matter?

“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me…and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:9

Discover: God promises to give us peace as we call out to Him, give Him all our worries and put into practice what He’s teaching us to do. God can give us that peace because He IS Peace! And the best part is:  God is ALWAYS with us!

Dialogue: If God is always with us, why don’t we notice Him? Do we need to feel alone, afraid or worried if He is with us? How does practicing what we’ve learned about thanksgiving, joy and peace help us experience His presence? Tell a story about when you have felt God’s presence.

Dive In: Practice looking for God in your day today. Watch for God glimpses, taking notice of His presence along the way. Share about this later.

“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me…”

What

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.
1 Timothy 4:15 (ESV)

Discover: To immerse means to be completely covered by something. We can immerse in thankfulness by practicing praying with joy and seeking God’s peace. What we do and say and how we respond to difficult circumstances are all ways we can practice thankfulness. As we do this, our lives are an example to all who see us.

Dialogue: What are some other things we immerse ourselves in practicing (tying our shoes, reading, playing the piano, sports)? We seldom do things right the first time, but that’s why we practice. Tell how you noticed making “progress” this month in being more thankful.

Dive In: Compliment how you have seen each other’s “progress” in thankfulness this month. Brainstorm some ways you can continue this practice.

Philippians 4:9
“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me…”

Worship

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually!” Psalm 105:4 (ESV)

Discover:  Practice isn’t something we do once; it is something we do over and over and over again. We must continually practice seeking God, following godly examples and being thankful. As we keep practicing this, we will reflect Christ more and more, which is how we can worship Him.

Dialogue: What are some ways we can continue to practice thanksgiving in our worship this week? How do others see Christ in you as you practice being thankful to Him?

Dive In:  Look in the mirror. Pray out loud as you look at your reflection. Thank God for what He has done in your life and who He has made you to be. Then dedicate this day to reflecting Him. May this be a “continual” practice for you!
