Ready, Set, Go!:

A Conversation about Identity

The foundation of a relationship with Jesus isn’t about what we DO but who we ARE in Him. Once we understand this, then we can go do what He’s called us to do. Jesus commanded His followers to GO tell others about Him in His power and authority! We get the privilege of making disciples in His Name – this is the Great Commission! This lesson encourages YOU to live this amazing calling and disciple those entrusted to you about it, too! Ready, Set, Go!!!

What Does The Bible Say?

This Week’s Memory Verse:

“Jesus…said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. GO therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…’” (Matthew 28:18-19 ESV)

This Week’s Verse for Preschool Families:  “Go… make disciples.” (Matthew 28.19)

What Truth is God Speaking to Us?

Jesus commanded His disciples to GO in His authority and tell other people about Him so that they can be His disciples, too!

Welcome

What Can We Learn About This Truth?

A disciple is a follower of someone else. We are disciples of Jesus because we are learning about and following Him! Once we are READY and SET by knowing who God is and who we are, then we can GO live for Him by making disciples for Him!

For Preschool Families:  In the Bible, Jesus had disciples; they were His helpers. They followed Him, believed in His power and helped spread His Word to other people. They told people about Jesus! We can do that too!

What Else Does the Bible Say About This?

So far this year, we’ve talked about Jesus’ conversation with His disciple Simon Peter. You may remember, Jesus asked Peter, “Who do you say I am?” Peter’s answer to that question – “You are Christ, the Son of the living God” – showed he was READY to live for Jesus (Matthew 16:16). And we are READY to live for Jesus when we know Who He is, too! Following Peter’s response, Jesus then told Peter about his identity, giving him a new name. That helped Peter be SET to live for Jesus. When we listen to the truth God speaks over us instead of what the world has to say, then we are SET to live for God, too!

After this, Jesus gave Peter a really big job, saying, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven…” (Matthew 16:18-19). Jesus gave Peter a job with authority that impacted heaven and earth! But Peter was READY and SET to GO tell the world about Jesus because he understood Who Jesus is as well as who he was in Jesus!

It’s the same for us! When we know who God is and who we are in Him, we get a really big calling, too. Hendrik Kraemer, a missionary to Indonesia in the last century, once said, “If you know who you are, then you will know what to do.” As we spend time with Jesus, we know who He is, who we are and what He calls us to do. Just like Peter was called to GO impact heaven and earth and make disciples in Jesus’ Name, so are we! We’re going to talk about this more in days to come, but, for now, let’s memorize our verse!

Wonders

What Questions Do We Have About This?

How are we READY to live for God? (by knowing Who God is!!!) How are we SET to live for God? (by knowing who HE says we are!) How does God want us to GO? (make disciples and live for Him) If God gives us the authority to GO impact heaven and earth in His Name, what does THAT say about our identity? What is “The Great Commission”? How does God want you to GO live for Him TODAY?

For Preschoolers: What does “disciple” mean? How can we be disciples?

How Can We Live Out This Truth?

In the Greek, the word “Go” in our memory verse literally means, “Having gone.” The command to “go” is not just an idea for the future, when we’re older, when life is easier or when we finally think we’re good enough. Jesus is ready for us to already be going! His Great Commission (which is what the verses we are memorizing are called) is now!

Listen to what Jesus said about us when we go in His Name: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do…” (John 14:12 ESV). Jesus gives us the ability to GO in His authority and do amazing things for Him!

Let’s talk right now about how Jesus wants each of us to “Go!” for Him today!

For Preschool Families:  Play a game of “Ready, Set, Go!” Print the verse image for this week and magnet it to the refrigerator. Tell your preschooler to run and find it and bring it back to you as fast as they can. Cheer your child on as they GO do this race, then relate that to how we can GO do what God tells us to do, too!

How Shall We Respond To The Lord In This Truth?

Worship through Prayer God, we think it is amazing that You have ALL authority in heaven and on earth and that You give us the opportunity to be part of that with You. We love that we get to be part of Your plan! Give us the ability to GO do what You call us to do today! Amen!
