Ready, Set, Go!:
A conversation about Identity
Life is pretty unpredictable, and who knows what’s around the corner in the new year. But here’s the thing: we can be prepared for the unexpected in the future by remembering who God is and what He has already done. The conversation about our identity starts with His identity, which is what we’ll learn about in lesson one of this 3-part series.

What Does The Bible Say?
This Week’s Memory Verse:
Matthew 16:15-16 “He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’” (ESV)
Matthew 16:16 “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
What Truth is God Speaking to Us?
Jesus asked Simon Peter who he truly believed that Jesus is, and Simon answered Him in a way that affected everything about his life.
What Can We Learn About This Truth?
Being READY to live our lives for God starts with realizing who God is. This makes all the difference in how we walk into the future and handle what comes our way.
What Else Does the Bible Say About This?
It’s a new year with lots of new things ahead! That’s really exciting! We have so many great things to look forward to! However, life is pretty unpredictable. None of us know exactly what is around the corner. But here’s the thing: we can be prepared for the unexpected in the future by remembering who God is and what He has already done. God sent Jesus to be “God with Us” (Matthew 1:23). That baby in the manger grew up to be the Savior that people followed. One day, Jesus asked His disciples: Who do people say that I am? Peter had the courage and boldness to answer, and what he said helps all of us who are Jesus’ disciples be READY to live for Him. Peter said, “You are Christ, the Son of the Living God,” and Jesus told him that he was exactly right (Matthew 16:16). Because Peter believed this, he was READY to follow Jesus for the rest of his life. Peter didn’t always get everything right, but he always got back on course for God because he believed that Jesus is who He said He is. It’s the same for us. When we know the identity of who we are following, we too can be READY to live for God no matter what unexpected things life throws our way.
What Questions Do We Have About This?
What does a new year feel like to you?
What are you excited, worried or scared about?
How does knowing who God is affect how you think about those things?
What does the Bible say about who God is?
What is one word YOU would use to describe God?
How does knowing who God is get you READY to live for Him?
How Can We Live Out This Truth?
In order for us to be READY to live our lives for God, we need to know who He is. Let’s look up some verses about God’s character then talk about how those affect how we think: Isaiah 9:6, Exodus 34:6-7, Numbers 23:19, Psalm 18:30, Psalm 91:2, Micah 7:18-19, 2 Peter 3:9, & 1 John 1:5.
For Preschool Families: (Build a blanket or pillow fort so that you have a visual representation of “fortress.”) Even though we may run into tough things in the new year, if we know who God is, we can be sure that He is in control and will protect us. Psalm 91:2 says, “I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” A refuge and fortress are things that help protect people. Let’s sit in our little “fortress” and talk about how God has protected us in our lives.
How Shall We Respond To The Lord In This Truth?
Worship through Praise and Prayer: God, You are ______ (use this blank to fill in something you’ve learned about God in this lesson). We are thankful for Your love for us and for Your grace and peace over our lives. We believe that You are who You say You are. When we doubt, remind us of this truth again. When we get scared, help us remember Your character. When unexpected things come our way, lead us to love like You do. You are worthy of all of the glory and honor and praise. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
