May You Pray – Along Life’s Way

Lesson 4 of 4: May You Pray

First, Seek Him!

Just like you listen to your kids’ voices, God listens to YOU every time you call out to Him. Wherever you are on your journey, when you say, “Lord, teach me to pray!” He will show you how to talk to Him more and more. “Seek Him” in prayer every day, as long as you have breath.

then, Speak Him!

Then “Speak Him” into the lives of those entrusted to you. What prayers has God answered in your life? Start here – this is your Jesus Story! Tell the next generation how God has heard your prayers! Then pray for them, over them and with them. Teach those entrusted to you to pray as God teaches you to pray. In Jesus’ Name, amen!!!

Whispers

What Truth is God Speaking to Us?

“I hear your voice; I hear your prayers. I listen when you cry out to me, so I want you to pray all along your life’s way.” ~ God (Stop and think about this!)

Wisdom

What Truth is God Speaking to Us Through His Word?

Lord, we want to learn to pray persistently, when life is okay and when it’s not okay. We want to learn to wait on You as we pray. We want to pray and praise You our entire lives. Give us Your perspective about prayer so that we never stop praying! Amen!

Welcome

What Can We Learn About This Truth?

As important as air is for breath, prayer is for life. God hears our prayers, so we want to learn to pray about everything every step along life’s way.

What Else Does the Bible Say About This?

Have you ever had someone really important stop and listen just to you? This doesn’t happen very often in life in human relationships, but it happens every single time we call out to God in prayer.

He created the entire universe; He sustains it every second of every day. He sees every person, every animal, every molecule. He keeps planets and stars from crashing into another; He brings the sun and moon out at the right time. He orchestrates when seasons change and waves crash and baby animals are born. God’s got a lot going on!

And yet… every time we call out to Him, He stops to listen to our prayers! Our verse says “He bends down to listen.” THAT is amazing. Why would somebody so important pay so much attention to us?

We don’t understand this truth, but the Bible tells us this is what God does. He say, “When you call out to me and come to me in prayer, I will hear your prayers” (Jeremiah 29:12 NET). What an amazing promise! So every day of our lives, we want to grow in prayer.

This is what King David did. From the time he was young, David loved to talk to God. David prayed three times a day, and he prayed when life wasn’t okay. David prayed and praised all along life’s way.

David’s confidence and trust in God began when he was a boy, taking care of his family’s sheep. Lions and bears attacked sometimes, but David learned to rely on God in everything – everything! When he prepared to fight Israel’s giant enemy Goliath, David said: “The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of the Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:37 HCSB).

As God answered David’s prayers one after another, he learned to prayerfully trust God for his whole life. In fact, he trusted God so much that he set an example for prayer for all the people who lived after him, including King Hezekiah and Daniel, you and me! The Bible tells many, many stories about David. In fact, his name is mentioned over 1,000 times! What is most special about David, though, is a really special book filled with David’s prayers and praise. It is called the book of Psalms (let me show it to you!). We can use the Psalms to pray and praise God just like David did.

What an amazing legacy! All along life’s way, we are going to pray, too!

Walking

How Can We Live Out This Truth?

The book of Revelation (8:3-4) says that God’s throne room is filled with the fragrance of His peoples’ prayers. Our prayers go up to heaven like the wonderful smell of a fragrant candle!

To experience a reminder of this, let’s end our special month-long “May You Pray” with a candlelit dinner and prayer time. For this special event, we’re going to light candles around our table and house to remind us of how God feels about our prayers. During dinner, we’re going to talk about what God has done and is doing in our lives.

Note: Consider inviting somebody you love and trust to join you for this special meal and prayer celebration! Decorate with the verse images that you have printed out throughout the month. Perhaps laminate these and use them as placemats at your table. Talk about the prayer requests and praises you have written down. Share with one another what you have talked about during the weeks of this study! Praise God for what He has done! Open and close dinner with a very special prayer, perhaps asking each person at the table to pray.
