20/20 Vision Check: Look to Godly Examples

Look To Godly Examples

First, Seek Him...

As we live in these crazy times, godly examples show us how to live faithful lives and run the race God has given each of us. As you ponder this week’s verse, seek the Lord about who He wants your heroes to be – then follow their example to Him!

...Then Speak Him

This week’s discipleship conversation is an opportunity to talk to those entrusted to you about your heroes. Share their stories! Identify new godly heroes as a family. BE a godly example to those looking to you – and teach them to do the same!

Hebrews 12:1
“Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”

Word

God, what are you saying to me?
This year may be unprecedented, but the challenges of being a Christ follower are not. Godly, faithful heroes ran their races in difficult times before us. They set an example for us as we run for Jesus, so that we can also run our race well. What are some of this year’s challenges? What godly examples do we have who are with the Lord? How does looking at them help and inspire us as we run our race for Jesus?

Why

God, why does this matter?
The race of life is never easy, especially when you live for more than yourself and for the Lord. Hebrews 11 teaches how godly people did this, laying aside the “weight” of fear, worry, stress, change, sickness, disease, persecution, death, anxiety and more. They also “lay aside” the sin that constantly trips up every one of us. They did this because of their enduring faith in God. Is your faith strong like theirs? What “weight” do you carry today? What sins trip you? How can you “lay aside” these to run like they did?

What

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?
At the end of his life, the Apostle Paul wrote Timothy, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). When we look around us for examples and heroes, we want to choose people who follow Jesus and put Him first. As we do a 20/20 vision check, who are our living heroes? Do we look to people who look to Jesus and His Word? How does the fruit of their lives show this?

Worship

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?
We worship God when we run with endurance the race He has set before us. We worship Him when we live our lives for His glory, following godly examples, setting aside unnecessary weight and refusing to be tripped up by sin. As we worship Him this way, WE become examples of faith for others to follow! What “race” has God called you to in this season? How are you an example to others of living for Jesus?
Hebrews 12:1
“Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”

A Family Blessing

A Blessing from this Lesson to Speak over Those God has Entrusted to You!

May you run in such a way as to receive the prize that God has for you. Every serious competitor goes into strict training, but they do it to get a crown that will not last. May you run for Jesus in such a way that you will receive a crown that will last forever (from 1 Corinthians 9:24-25). In Jesus’ Name, amen!
