Discipleship Starts with a Conversation
Life Under Construction
“Build You Life on Jesus”
There’s an old song I learned decades ago in children’s church that rings in my mind even today. We sang “The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock” with actions and gusto, all the while internalizing the truth Jesus taught about how to build our lives on His solid rock. In this new conversation series, I’ve been challenged anew to “build my life on the Lord.” I hope this series will encourage and challenge you to do this, too! You can read the intro blog HERE. Or, you can skip that and dive straight into following devotion to “Seek Him” then “Speak Him.” Let’s build our lives on the Lord and teach others to do this too! Be encouraged! Tosha ❤️
Matthew 7:24
“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Seek Him!
Jesus’ story of the wise and foolish builders helps us think about how we build our lives. Let’s read Matthew 7:24-27 and seek God about how His construction plans will impact us!
Word
God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?
To wisely build our lives, Jesus says to hear His words AND do them. In this discipleship conversation series, we’re going to focus on many things Jesus said. Each of us gets to decide whether or not we will listen to and do what He says. ~ What does “the rock” symbolize in Jesus’ story? What did Jesus say to build on the rock? What two things did Jesus say we must do to build on the rock?
Why
God, why does this matter?
Houses built on solid foundations stand strong in storms, while houses built on shaking, shifting foundations fall. This is true in the physical world and in our lives. Jesus said that rain will come, storms will rage, waters will rise and winds will blow. Those who build their lives without Him will crash when hard times come, but those who build their lives on Jesus will stand firm through it all. ~ How does Jesus’ word picture affect you? Are you experiencing any rain, storms or winds in your life right now?
What
God, What else does your word say about this?
Luke’s Gospel records Jesus’ words this way, “As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built” (Luke 7:47-48). Laying a deep foundation on rock requires effort, but the result is an unshakeable “well built” life. ~ Have we had a “flood” or “torrent” in our lives lately? How are we standing? What are some ways you are putting effort into building a deep foundation on Jesus in your life?
Worship
God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?
Hebrews 3:6 encourages us, “Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house…” We worship God when we listen and do what He says to build the houses of our lives. ~ Rock or sand foundation? What do you want with your life? What is God telling you to do today?
Speak Him!
Once we “Seek Him,” we can “Speak Him” into the lives of the people God has entrusted to us. This is what discipleship is!
Our lives are “under construction” as we build our lives God’s way, for His glory and our good! Let’s encourage each other to let Him do this in the construction zones of our lives today!
