Lets Talk About… Guarding Your Heart

Guarding Your Heart

First, Seek Him...

As our world shifts and changes, ideas, beliefs and emotions seek space in our hearts. Some of these are good; some of these are not. God wants us to watch over our hearts like guards. Ask God to show you what you’re treasuring in your heart today.

...Then Speak Him

The next generation is watching what we store and treasure in our hearts. We can’t hide it, because what’s in our hearts flows out of our hearts. As you seek to store good treasures in your heart, teach those entrusted to you about this! Speak Him!

Proverbs 4:23
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

God, what are you saying to me?

God wants you to guard your heart because it affects everything you say, think, feel and do. The Hebrew words of this verse could be translated: “Your whole life flows from your heart, so guard it! Guard it!” In other words, protect your heart, watch over it, be diligent about it! What is it like to guard something? What is influencing you today?

God, why does this matter?

As influences knock on our hearts’ doors, ideas, beliefs and emotions try to get in. When we allow the wrong ones to enter our hearts, we won’t be able to deal with what’s already in our hearts, and we won’t be the people God wants us to be. As we guard our hearts today, are there some beliefs, emotions, thoughts, ideas or relationships we should NOT allow in? Are there any of these you are especially struggling with today? Why does it matter to keep guard?

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

The good news is that, in being a guard, we don’t just keep bad things out, we keep good things in. Jesus said, “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil…” (Luke 6:45). What we allow INTO our hearts will affect what comes OUT OF our hearts. If we want treasures like joy, peace, hope and love to flow out of our hearts, what are some good things we will allow to influence us? How does God’s Word guard our hearts? What good treasures does God’s Word put in our hearts?

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

Guarding your heart is about keeping the wrong things out and the right things in. Protecting our hearts is a daily endeavor, especially during hard times like our country and world is facing today. However, guarding our hearts is one way we can worship God for His glory and our good. Will you be a guard to your heart?

Proverbs 4:23
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
