It Starts with a Conversation

Lets Talk About… Getting Understanding

Getting Understanding

First, Seek Him...

We “get” lots of things in life – we get groceries, we get lunch, we get angry, we get upset, etc – but God wants us to “get” wisdom and understanding. These aren’t usually on our to-get list, but this conversation encourages us to stop and think about it. Are you getting what God wants you to get today?

...Then Speak Him

As you “Seek Him” about what He wants you to “get,” this is the perfect time to speak into the next generation about this. As you prioritize “getting” wisdom and understanding, teach your kids about what it looks like in your life. Make a commitment as a family to get wisdom and understanding this week.

Proverbs 4:7
“Wisdom is supreme – so get wisdom. And whatever else you get, get understanding”

God, what are you saying to me?

We “get” lots of things in life, and we usually pursue what we want to get until we’ve gotten it. But, no matter what else we may get along life’s way, God wants us to get wisdom and understanding. Wisdom is “supreme” (or, most important) because it helps us see life from God’s perspective. Understanding helps us put His wisdom into practice in how we live and interact with others. So, what are some things that you like to get (exercise, a snack, a joke…)? Why is wisdom most important to “get”? Understanding?

God, why does this matter?

During hard times, people get angry, get violent or get frustrated. We see plenty of examples of this around us, on social media and in the news. However, God wants His people to get wisdom and understanding even if it “costs you all you have” (NIV). To Him, wisdom is more valuable than gold and understanding more valuable than silver (Proverbs 16:16). If wisdom and understanding are this important to God, how much should they matter to us? What have you been “getting” lately? Has wisdom or understanding been on your “get” list at all? How have you made these matter in your life recently?

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

How we live our lives shows if we are wise and understanding. Jesus’ half-brother James wrote: Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom” (James 3:13 NIV).  The passage continues: “The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness” (vs. 17-18). How do wise and understanding people help change the world? How could this help our country today?

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

Scripture says, “A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion” (Proverbs 18:2). Instead of being foolish, we can glorify God by getting wisdom and understanding like He tells us. We can get wisdom by being in His Word (like we’re doing right now), and we can get understanding by humbly, peacefully, sincerely listening to others. How will YOU be this kind of person this week?
