Family Disciple Me responds to the Covid-19 Pandemic

It Starts with a Conversation

Lets Talk About… Being Teachable

Being Teachable

First, Seek Him...

We never outgrow the need to be teachable. Before we try to teach the next generation, we want to “Seek Him” and be willing to learn what God has for us in our own lives. How are you letting the Lord “teach” you today?

...Then Speak Him

Our teachable spirits model to the next generation what it looks like to be willing to learn. This conversation about being teachable sets the stage for all the discipleship conversations to come in this series. Engage the discussion with your kids about being teachable today!

Proverbs 1:8
“Listen, my child, to the instruction from your father, and do not forsake the teaching from your mother.”

God, what are you saying to me?

Every person in a family has a responsibility: moms and dads are to teach their kids, and kids are to be teachable. The book of Proverbs was written by King Solomon to help his son learn, grow, understand and become wise. I want to teach you, too, but you must be teachable – which means willing to learn. Let’s talk about “teachable” in our family. In what ways am I trying to teach you? In what ways are you teachable?

God, why does this matter?

Proverbs is full of reasons why it’s important for kids to be teachable. For example, the father in Proverbs 4 said, “I am guiding you on straight paths (so that) when you walk, your steps will not be hindered; and if you run, you will not stumble…My child, pay attention to my words…for they are life to those who find them and healing to the entire body” (vs. 11b-12, 20-22). When the dad speaks of walking and running, what is he referring to? How could his words bring life and healing? Might any of these blessings matter in your life right now?.

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

As you are teachable, you honor me with your obedience, and God honors you with a promise. The Bible says: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise) so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:1-3 NASB). Do you want God’s blessing in your life? What happens when you have a teachable spirit? Let’s read all of Proverbs 4 to see what other promises God’s Word gives you for this.

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

In every area of life, we worship God by living how He calls us to live. Over and over, Scripture tells me to teach you and you to be teachable. It is not always easy for you to do your part, but it’s not always easy for me to do my part, either. However, we can lean in together and seek to be the family God calls us to be in these areas of teaching and being teachable. We’re going to talk a lot about this in the weeks to come, so let’s pray about being teachable as a family right now.

Proverbs 1:8
“Listen, my child, to the instruction from your father, and do not forsake the teaching from your mother.”
