John 14:6
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

Word

God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?

In the Gospels, Jesus was telling His disciples about heaven when Thomas asked Him, “How can we know the way?” (John 14:5).  Jesus answered with this very clear statement about Himself:  “I am the way and the truth and the life…” Jesus did not claim to be a way, a truth or a possible option for life. He said He is the way, the truth and the life. ~ Let’s talk about word choices for a moment. What is the difference between “a way” and “the way” to go somewhere? How does this help us understand what Jesus said about Himself?

Why

God, why does this matter?

Our world sees heaven as a destination with many ways leading to it and truth as a vending machine from which you can pick and choose what you like. However, with His statement “No one comes to the Father except through me” Jesus put a stake in the ground about Himself. He is not just an option in the midst of many options; according to Him, He is the only option. Jesus’ words matter because, if He is who He says He is, this must affect what we believe is true and what way we choose. ~ Why is this so? Why, if Jesus is who He says He is, must this affect what we believe? What do you believe?

What

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

To each of His disciples, Jesus said, “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19). They didn’t know exactly where He was going or what path lay before them. They had to trust Jesus that He knew where He was taking them. If we’re going to follow Jesus, we have to trust Him, too, that He is the way and the truth. This isn’t easy, and the Bible says, “The way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it” (Matthew 7:14 NASB). ~ What does Matthew 7:12-13 say about the path most people choose? Why do you think the way to the life Jesus talks about is “narrow”? How do you find the path to it? What must you do to follow Jesus?

Worship

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

Just like today, many people in Bible times would not believe Jesus is the way or truth; even some of His own followers left Him (John 6:66). When Jesus asked His remaining disciples if they were going to leave Him, too, Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:67-68). ~ What about you? Will you believe Jesus? Will you walk your way and the world’s way, or will you follow Jesus’ way? Let’s pray!

John 14:6
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
