The angels’ words in Luke 2:11+14
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord… Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.”
Word
God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?
At Christmastime, the world celebrates holiday traditions, family gatherings and special occasions. We enjoy these as well, but at Christmas we celebrate Christ the very most. God saw our need and sent us “a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” The angels’ announcement of Jesus’ arrival is our 3rd “Gospel Gift” truth: God’s gift to us is our Savior Jesus Christ. ~ What do you think it was like to see or hear the angels’ announcement when Jesus was born? How do we celebrate Christmas? Why?
Why
God, why does this matter?
We don’t just live in a broken world, we are broken people. And while we can give each other nice presents, we can’t give each other what we need most. God’s gift of Jesus is greater than any gift we could ever find underneath a Christmas tree. God’s gift matters because, through relationship with Him, we can experience salvation and every other gift we need: peace, hope, healing, joy, and so much more. ~ What do you need most right now? How does the gift of Christ lead to other gifts? How are we blessed by this?
What
God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?
In Genesis, the patriarch Jacob said, “I wait for your salvation, O Lord” (49:18 ESV). Jacob was well aware of the brokenness in his life and family. His prayer began the Old Testament theme of people looking and waiting for God’s salvation. Scripture says, “Concerning this salvation…even angels long to look into these things” (1 Peter 1:10-12 NIV). What joy when the New Testament times arrived and the angels got to announce the good news that Jesus our Savior was born! ~ Why do you think the angels were so intrigued by salvation? What does it feel like when you get to bring good news? How do you feel when you receive a gift you’ve waited a long time for? Do we have to wait for salvation now? How do you receive this gift?

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?
Whatever else the world celebrates at Christmas, our family celebrates Jesus. And though we must wait until Christmas Eve (or Day) to open our Christmas presents, we can enjoy Jesus and experience His salvation and peace now. ~ Let’s talk about Jesus. Is He real to you? What questions do you have about your relationship with Him? Next week in Advent we will talk more about seeing and receiving Him

A Family Blessing
Lord God, with the angels we celebrate that Christ our Savior is born and that we have received the salvation gift He has given us. We love You. May our lives bring You praise!
