Election 2020: A Call to Praise and Hope

ELECTION 2020: PRAISE AND HOPE

First, Seek Him...

As our nation’s future hangs in the balance, we can go crazy with speculation and fear – or we can re-center our thoughts on the Lord. This week’s discipleship conversation is a call to focus on God and His Word just as the psalmists did in their tumultuous times. Be encouraged!

...Then Speak Him

Our kids are watching us as we watch the news, media, election results and outcomes. They see what matters most to us and where we place our highest hopes. We are citizens in this country, but we are also citizens of heaven. This week, be sure to “Speak Him” even as you watch and wait.

from Psalm 33
“…It is fitting for the upright to praise…Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.”

Word

God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?

This psalm tells God’s people what our focus should be no matter what is happening in the world around us. God’s Word says it is “fitting” for us to praise Him and to put our hope in Him even as our country’s future hangs in the balance. ~ Take a couple minutes to read Psalm 33. What do you think the original context for this psalm might have been? What is God speaking to YOU through it?

Why

God, why does this matter?

Psalm 33 has no identified author or setting, making it even more easily applicable for every person in every generation in every nation. This chapter speaks to countries, leaders and unsettling times. However, it makes clear that, even in the midst of national crisis and change, God wants His people to focus on Him with praise and hope. ~ As you watch the news unfold this week, what are you grounding your heart in this week? Will you let this psalm guide your heart this week?

What

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

This chapter reminds us that we put our hope in the wrong things if we hope in anything more than we hope in the Lord. Psalm 33:16-17 says that trusting in kings and war horses is vain. We don’t trust in kings and horses today, but we are tempted to trust in people and politics to save us. So what is our hope to be? Psalm 33 says, “We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield” (v.20). ~ If God’s Word is true, then how are we putting our trust and hope in Him this week in particular?

Worship

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

We worship God when we live according to His Word, in season and out of season, in good times and in bad times, when elections are happening and when they are over. Sometimes we don’t know the words to say or the exact prayers to pray. This week is a good week to worship God by praying aloud the verses of this psalm, Psalm 33. ~ Re-read Psalm 33 aloud, verse by verse, privately or as a family.

from Psalm 33
“…It is fitting for the upright to praise…Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.”

A Family Blessing

A Blessing from this Lesson to Speak over Those God has Entrusted to You!

We hope in You, Lord. We choose to trust You and Your Word regardless of what is happening around us. As we do this, may Your blessing fall on our lives and families and nation even as You promise. In Jesus’ Name, amen!
