Isaiah 1:17
“Learn to do good! Seek justice, relieve the oppressed, defend orphans, plead for the widow.”

God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?

God wants His people to care about other people. He wants us to pursue justice, help the oppressed and defend the defenseless. He wants us to stand in the gap between good and evil, interceding on behalf of those in need. In order to love like this, God tells us to “learn to do good.” We can learn by watching great examples, imitating their behavior and practicing doing good things. ~ Who have you seen do good in our world or stand up for what is right? What did you learn from their good example? What good can you do?

God, why does this matter?

We live in a selfish, broken world, full of sin, darkness and pain. God despises it when people act like they love Him but don’t do anything to care about others. He wants us to love people like He does, bringing light to the darkness and hope to the brokenness. ~ Let’s read all of Isaiah chapter 1. What does this passage say does not matter to God? What does matter to Him? What is God saying to you?

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

“This is what the Lord Almighty said, ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other” (Zechariah 7:9-10 NIV) The Psalms echo that saying, “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (Psalm 82:3-4 NIV). This theme of doing good for other people is repeated throughout all of Scripture. ~ If doing good is this important to God, how important ought it be to us? What does this tell us about the kind of God we serve? Which phrase in these verses stands out most to your heart?

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

God wants us to “LOVE LIKE THIS: Do Good in Our World.” What this looks like will be different for each of us, depending on things like our ages, talents, gifts and opportunities. We are not responsible for the whole entire world. However, we can “LOVE LIKE THIS” exactly where He has placed us, one relationship at a time. When we do, He receives it as worship unto Him! ~ Let’s ask God if there’s anybody He wants us to help today! Let’s do good for them and dedicate the coming weeks to learn what it means to love like this.

Isaiah 1:17
“Learn to do good! Seek justice, relieve the oppressed, defend orphans, plead for the widow.”
