DESTINATIONS: Passive or Prayerful

Passive or Prayerful

First, Seek Him...

When we see pain and suffering, we can either sit back and do nothing, or we can actively engage, starting with prayer and then leading to whatever God shows us. Ask God to speak through you through the Scripture in this conversation!

...Then Speak Him

The next generation is watching how we respond to the needs in the world around us. What example are we setting for them to follow? How are we leading them? With this conversation, talk about how to pray for others as a family! Seek the Lord then Speak Him today!

2 Corinthians 1:11
“You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.”

Word

God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?

This verse was written as a prayer request, and even today people are crying out for us to pray for them. So much pain and suffering exists in this world. We can respond to others’ struggles by being passive, which means we do nothing and simply focus on our own lives. Or, we can choose the path of prayerfulness and intentionally, regularly cry out to God on their behalf. ~ What does it mean to be “passive”? How is prayer the opposite of that? Who are you already praying for today?

Why

God, why does this matter?

We can’t physically touch or help every situation, but our great God can! He has the power to save and deliver. As we become aware of needs in our country and around the world, we can partner in prayer with those in need. ~ Let’s spend a moment listening to God about who to pray for right now. This may be somebody we know or someone we don’t know and will never meet. Let’s ask God to give us a picture of who needs our prayers. Then, let’s pray that God will work in their life, right now, today!

What

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

The Apostle Paul’s words tell us the story behind his prayer request:  “We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. You also must help us by prayer…” (2 Corinthians 1:8-11a). ~ What does this passage tell us about Paul’s story? Who does this passage remind us of today? Are we aware of any people who have “received the sentence of death” for whom we can pray? Is there anything else God might have us do for them?

Worship

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

Prayer is the opposite of passivity. Intercessory prayer is actively engaging the God of the universe on behalf of the needs in this world. The destination of prayerfulness leads us to God’s throne “to find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). We may never know until eternity what our prayers accomplish, but we do know that God hears and answers prayer! ~ Let’s set a prayer reminder on our phones for 4 p.m. to remind us to “Pray 4 ______.”

2 Corinthians 1:11
“You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.”
