It Starts with a Conversation

“DESTINATIONS: Lies or Truth”

First, Seek Him...

Every step we take leads us somewhere, and this applies to lies and truth as much as to anything. Are you in any way lying to yourself or walking toward deception? Seek the Lord about truth in your life with this conversation!

...Then Speak Him

Teaching the next generation to be honest and trustworthy is essential to building their character. We get good at what we practice, and this principle applies to lies and truth, too. What are your kids practicing? Point them towards our True God and Speak Him today!

Proverbs 12:22
“The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”

God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?

Scripture says lies are “detestable” to God, which means they are disgusting to Him. However, He “delights in people who are trustworthy.” This means His favor and blessing are on dependable, honest truth-telling people. Sometimes it’s tempting to let “little lies” slip through our lips, but each and every lie leads us down a path away from God and His goodness. We get to choose whether we’ll walk toward lies or truth. One path leads to God’s discipline while the other path leads to His blessing. ~ Would you rather have God’s discipline or blessing in your life? Where is your path leading you today? (Be honest!)

God, why does this matter?

We “get good” at what we practice! Telling the truth leads us to be trustworthy and also helps us discern what is true and not true. The opposite destination, the path of lies, helps us “get good” at deception. Steps down that path also lead to being lied to and deceived – – – which we might not even realize until it’s too late! You know which destination you’re choosing by what you’re practicing! ~ What are you “getting good at” today:  telling the truth or telling lies? What are some benefits of telling the truth? What are some consequences of lying? How does lying make you more vulnerable to lies and deception? Has this ever happened to you? How does truth telling lead you to being more discerning – or able to recognize – truth?

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

Jesus said “I am the Way and the Truth…” (John 14:6), and He is “called Faithful and True” in Revelation (19:11). On the opposite path, the devil is a liar and the father of lies” (see John 8:44). As we talk about DESTINATIONS in this series, we know truth leads us to Jesus while lies ultimately lead to Satan. ~ Do lies ever lead us closer to Jesus? Why or why not? Do we have any lies leading us away from truth right now?

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

Colossians 3:9 says, Do not lie to each other…” but sometimes we’re so far down the path of lies that we desperately need help to escape it. We can cry out, “Deliver me, O Lord, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue” (Psalm 120:2). As we pray for His help, we can confess our sins of telling lies and being deceptive. The best way to get off the path of lies is to tell the truth! ~ Are there any lies directing you to the wrong destination right now? Do you need to confess anything? Let’s ask for God’s help in being truthful!

Proverbs 12:22
“The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”
