DESTINATIONS: Evil or Good

DESTINATIONS: Evil or Good

First, Seek Him...

There is so much evil in our world, but God does not want His people to be overcome by it. Instead, He wants us to name evil for what it is and to defeat it by being a blessing. What does this look like in your life? Seek Him about this today!

...Then Speak Him

Our kids are growing up in a culture that blurs the lines between evil and good. However, God’s Word makes it very clear which is which. Let’s disciple the next generation about evil versus good, using this conversation. Speak Him today!

Listen to the Podcast

Romans 12:21
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Word

God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?
Our world is filled with brokenness caused by evil. This can be overwhelming, difficult and very sad! Being “overcome by evil” happens when we join in it, return evil for evil, or do nothing about it. Instead, God wants His people to “overcome evil with good.” To “overcome” something is to conquer it or subdue it. So, to conquer evil with good means that we intentionally live to be blessings in a broken world. ~ What is evil? What are some examples of it? What are some ways God’s Word tells us to live lives of goodness?

Why

God, why does this matter?
In the Garden of Eden, God first pointed out the destinations of evil and good, warning Adam and Eve against the evil path. They chose it anyway, and, ever since, every person who has ever lived has had a choice to make about good and evil. Plenty of people choose the path of evil, but God wants us to choose a better path – – – the path of good. ~ Why do you think the battle between evil and good has been a struggle since the beginning of time? What are some ways that you have seen people “overcome evil with good”?

What

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?
Doing good does not earn us salvation, but it is how we glorify God and overcome evil in this world. 1 Peter 3:9 tells us: “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing…” Jesus said, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him” (Matthew 12:34). ~ Is there anybody in your life right now who is evil or insulting to you? How do you want to respond? What does God want you to respond? How can you know what is stored up in your heart? How do you bless and do good to mean, evil people?

Worship

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?
We can worship God when we determine to do good in His Name no matter what. This can be really, really hard! However, when we “Turn from evil and do good” (Psalms 34:14; 1 Peter 3:11), we are living as children of God, reflecting His goodness in our evil, broken world. ~ Will we worship God in this way? What are some specific ways you can “do good” and be a blessing this week?
Romans 12:21
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
