An Algorithm With an Amen: Choose God

Algorithm- Choose God

First, Seek Him...

Simply put, an algorithm determines what happens next. Though we cannot control every algorithm in this world that affects us, we can determine the algorithms of our own hearts. We can choose to follow God and serve Him. This one decision affects everything else. What do YOU choose?

...Then Speak Him

When WE choose to follow God and seek Him, we can then turn around and speak Him into the lives of those entrusted to us. We can disciple them about how we live by God’s algorithms, and we can encourage them to choose Him, too!

Joshua 24:14-15
“Fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness…
But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Word

God, what are you saying to me?

Everyone gets to choose whether or not they will serve the Lord. This choice is like an “algorithm,” something that sets the rules, standards and instructions for our lives. Many people see serving God as “undesirable,” so they won’t choose Him. However, God’s people choose to “fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness.” In this series, we call this decision “An Algorithm with an Amen,” and it’s a choice God will bless. ~ What kind of family are we? Is it “desirable” to you to choose God? Why or why not?

Why

God, why does this matter?

Algorithms determine what happens next – whether it’s a computer algorithm, a traffic signal or the decision to serve God. The direction of our lives is determined by whether we choose Him. Choosing to fear and serve God means submitting to His authority and living by His “algorithms” (which we’ll talk more about in the next couple weeks). ~ What are some familiar examples of algorithms? If you choose to serve God, what are some “algorithms” you know He sets for your life? How does He do this? Is it easy or hard to obey Him? What’s an example of how God sends you one direction and the world sends you another?

What

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

In the Old Testament, “The people said to Joshua, ‘…We will serve the Lord.’ Then Joshua said to the people, ‘You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.’ And they said, ‘We are witnesses…The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey’” (Joshua 24:21-24). When we declare ourselves Christians, we, too, are witnesses that we choose God. This requires us to serve and obey Him, just like it did for the people in Joshua’s day. ~ Have you chosen God, to serve and follow Him? Why does choosing Him require obeying Him?

Worship

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

When we choose God, we align our hearts with His. This means that what He loves and values, we love and value. This means that He calls right and wrong, we call right and wrong. This means that what He tells us to do, we do. This means we allow everything about our lives’ algorithms to be determined by Him and His standards for us. ~ Are we willing to live our lives this way? How do we align our hearts with His?

Joshua 24:14-15
“Fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness…
But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

A Family Blessing

A Blessing from this Lesson to Speak over Those God has Entrusted to You!

Lord God, we choose You! Set the algorithms of our lives so that we faithfully follow You every day in every way. This is truly “an algorithm with an amen” – so, in Jesus’ Name, amen!
