It Starts with a Conversation

Advent Conversations: Out of Aloneness; into His Presence

First, Seek Him...

We live in community with family, friends, co-workers and classmates. We are surrounded by people, but sometimes we feel so alone. Through Jesus, God made a way to be with us – so we are never alone. Have you experienced His Presence in your life?

...Then Speak Him

If you have truly experienced God’s Presence, then you will want those entrusted to you to experience Him, too. Use this conversation to highlight how God sought to be with us and encourage our kids to seek to be with Him!

Isaiah 9:3+6
“They will be glad in Your presence…
For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us…”

God, What Are You Saying To Me?

You can be glad because I made a way to be with you.

Discover: We live in community, yet sometimes we feel alone! God knew this and made a way to be with us. The angel said, “They shall call His name Immanuel (which means ‘God with us’)” (Matthew 1:23b). God’s Presence is the amazing “present” of Christmas.

Dialogue: What presents are you looking forward to this Christmas? What does the “present” of God’s Presence mean to you?

Dive In: You must receive a present in order to really enjoy and experience it. Let’s pray welcoming God’s Presence with us as we light our second Advent candle today.

Isaiah 9:3+6
“They will be glad in Your presence…
For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us…”

 God, Why Does This Matter?

I am near to you.”

Discover: God’s presence makes all the difference in our lives. We can walk our paths alone, or we can seek Him and be glad in His nearness to us.

Dialogue: What things distract you from seeking God’s Presence – things like games, tv, social media, etc? Do these make your heart glad? God says, “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). How do our hearts feel when we seek Him?

Dive In: Let’s each choose a way to seek God’s Presence today, be that prayer, Bible reading, memorizing our verse or another way. Later, let’s share how we encountered His Presence through this.

Isaiah 9:3+6
“They will be glad in Your presence…
For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us…”

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

“A Son will be given to us…” (Isaiah 9:6); “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31 NIV)

Discover: It’s so fun to find a present TO you and FOR you! This Christmas and always, that’s what the gift of Jesus is! In other religions, people work hard to get to their god or become a god. Christmas is about the one true God coming TO us and being FOR us!

Dialogue: God wants to have a real relationship with you; do you want to have a real relationship with Him? How have you experienced that God is “for you”?

Dive In: Make it a point to be “for” somebody today. When you notice someone is alone or that others are against them, be the hands and feet of Jesus by going to them and being for them.

Isaiah 9:3+6
“They will be glad in Your presence…
For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us…”

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

“You will make me full of gladness with Your presence” (Acts 2:28b)

Discover: It’s one thing to have fun here or happiness there; it’s another thing to be FULL of gladness. The happiness of Christmas is about more than gifts, presents and special events. Christmas is about the lasting gladness we experience in relationship with Jesus!

Dialogue: What are some other words for “glad”? How long do presents and things make us happy? What does it feel like to be “full of gladness”? What are some ways the gift of God’s Presence makes us glad?

Dive In: Christmas is a time of joy and gladness because Jesus is Immanuel, God with us. As we go about the holidays this year, let’s not just focus on how the presents, decorations and fun times make us glad. Let’s intentionally look for God glimpses and be full of gladness because of His Presence.

A Family Blessing

A Blessing from this Lesson to Speak over Those God has Entrusted to You!

“May God make known to you the path of life; may you find fullness of joy in His Presence; may you experience all the pleasures that He has for you as you walk with Him, today and always (Psalm 16:11). In the Name of Jesus, amen!”
