It Starts with a Conversation

Advent Conversations: Out of Ordinary; Into God’s Extraordinary Plan

First, Seek Him...

Sometimes it’s hard to imagine that God loves us as much as we love those entrusted to us. In fact, He loves us so much more, and He is eager – or, “zealous” – to accomplish His extraordinary plan in our lives. What is God accomplishing in YOU right now?

...Then Speak Him

As you feel God accomplishing His purposes in your life, tell your Jesus Story to the next generation. Share what He is doing in you, and encourage your kids to let Him work in their lives, too!

Isaiah 9:7
“…The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.”

God, What Are You Saying To Me?

God is passionate about fulfilling His promises!

Discover: We’re excited about Christmas, but God is even more “zealous” – or, excited – about it. He saw our need, He promised to send a Savior to help us, and then He accomplished His plan. We serve a God who is even more excited about Christmas than we are!

Dialogue: What does the word “zeal” mean? What are you excited about this Christmas? What is God passionate about? What’s extraordinary about this?

Dive In: Let’s pray God would align our hearts with what His heart is passionate about as we light our fourth Advent candle.

Isaiah 9:7
“…The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.”

 God, Why Does This Matter?

We can depend on God to do what He promises.

Discover: God does what He says He will do. He willingly – zealously – promised to send a Savior, and Jesus accomplished our salvation! God’s Word says, “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5 NIV). It was impossible for us to save ourselves, but God is the God of the impossible. We can depend on God to do what He says He will do.

Dialogue: Why could we not save ourselves? If God can accomplish our salvation, what other impossible things can we depend on Him to do? How does Jesus’ Name “Mighty God” relate to the “impossible” in our lives?

Dive In: Talk about what seems “impossible” to you right now. Maybe there’s a Christmas miracle you are praying for. Which of God’s promises come to mind relating to this? Pray to the God of the “impossible” to accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:7
“…The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.”

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

“He who promised is faithful” Hebrews 10:23

Discover: God promised in Isaiah 9 that He would send a Savior who is our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace. God didn’t just make this promise, though. He faithfully accomplished it, beginning with: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior” (Luke 1:11).

Dialogue: How is Christmas a fulfillment of God’s extraordinary promise? How has God been faithful to fulfill one of His promises in your story?

Dive In: If God faithfully fulfilled His promises yesterday, then we can trust Him to faithfully fulfill His promises tomorrow. Like a child anticipating opening Christmas presents, we can anticipate His faithful work in our lives. What are you looking forward to seeing God accomplish in you?

Isaiah 9:7
“…The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.”

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

“Praise him for his powerful acts; praise him for his abundant greatness.” (Psalm 150:2 CSB)

Discover: As we eagerly celebrate Christmas, we can remember that God is even more eager to accomplish His plan and purpose! He is Who He says He is, and He will do what He says He will do – – – in sending Jesus, in giving us salvation, in fulfilling His promises! These are the best presents ever!

Dialogue: All our Christmas “zeal” combined is nothing compared to God’s “zeal” over His extraordinary plan. How does knowing this affect your Christmas celebration this week?

Dive In: Write a letter to Jesus thanking and praising Him for all He has done in your life. Save your family’s letters in a special place so that you can look back on these in future years!

A Family Blessing

A Blessing from this Lesson to Speak over Those God has Entrusted to You!

“As much as you anticipate the gifts of Christmas, may you even more so anticipate all that God has promised to do in your life as you follow Him. He has an extraordinary plan for you, so I pray you will never settle for the ordinary. May you seek Him always! In Jesus’ Name, amen!”
