Advent Conversation One from Isaiah 9:  “Out of Darkness and Into the Light”

Out of the Darkness and into the light

First, Seek Him...

As we begin Advent this year, we start with the reality that because of sin we live in a world of brokenness and darkness. God knew this about our lives and made a way for us to experience life through His light. How have you experienced this?

...Then Speak Him

Every person experiences this world’s darkness, even those dear ones entrusted to you. Let the beautiful lights of Christmas remind you to engage the next generation about the hope we have in the light of Jesus. Speak Him today!

Isaiah 9:2
“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light…The light will shine on them…”

God, what are you saying to me through this Scripture?

Christmas is a time of joy, but it can also be a time when our hearts hurt. This was true the first Christmas, too. Humanity needed light in our darkness, and in Isaiah 9 God said He was sending a light for us all. Our Advent begins here this year, as we remember God’s promise to bring us out of the darkness and into the light of Jesus! ~ Is there anything hurting your heart right now? What did God promise to do about that?

God, why does this matter?

Christmas lights completely change a darkened room. In the same way, Jesus’ light completely changes us! We may be struggling with the darkness of fear, shame, guilt, regret or many other things. However, with Jesus, the darkness of these things doesn’t have to overwhelm us anymore. When we choose to follow Him, His light will guide us into hope, healing, salvation and redemption. ~ We all have darkness, so what darkness do you need help with? Will you let Jesus help you in this? Has He helped you before? How?

God, What Else Does Your Word Say About This?

An old Jewish priest named Zechariah said, “The Sunrise from on high will visit us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death” (Luke 1:78-79). Just as every sunrise chases away the night’s darkness, Jesus’ coming is our Sunrise, chasing away our darkness, fears, shadows and even death’s power. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Whatever the darkness in our lives, if we follow Jesus, He will lead us toward life as we walk in His light.~ Have you chosen to follow Jesus? How are you walking in His light?

God, How do you want me to respond to this truth?

The Bible says God has “called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). It also says, “At one time you were darkness, but now you are light. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8). We can walk as children of light this Christmas and always by choosing not to hide in the shadows of our sin, shame, dark secrets or guilt. We truly celebrate the light of Christmas when we live in Jesus’ light!  ~ Let’s talk about how God wants us to come “out of the darkness into the light” this Christmas! Let’s pray!

Isaiah 9:2
“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light…The light will shine on them…”
